Now at the beginning of 2007 many companies using older versions of SSA BAAN ERP software are considering an upgrade to Infor ERP LN.
But how to go from one version to the other when so much of the architecture has changed?
In Infor ERP LN, the database has changed completely compared to BAAN IV. Data cannot just be carried over from one side to the other. During every implementation the ERP system looks different and for every implementation a specific way has to be found.
Additionally the migration product coming from the software vendor must provide the flexibility for all users. This means a huge and complex software solution must be created to ensure a proper way of migrating data for ALL users. The words ‘huge and complex’ in the IT-industry are synonyms for long and expensive projects. In this case: migration projects.

It is time to think about another way of migrating your BAAN ERP data.
Within the IT-industry it is well known that customers’ requirements are overlapping in 60 to 80 % of the cases. Therefore why not start with an industry standard and migrate only the 20 to 40 % of your individual requirements.

Let us draw a picture of the actual situation:

Assume, the UNITED NATIONS are developing a universal translation solution. In the UN, there are 220 different languages in use. The solution must have the ability to translate 220 languages into 220 languages. This means, 220 * 220 =, 48,400 translating modes have to be supported to satisfy the requirements of all countries.
Everyone agrees this will be a huge and complex solution. Perhaps it will become too complex and perhaps it will never work.
Another way could be to define one standard language, i.e. English. Now this universal translation solution must be able to translate 220 languages into one language: English.
This means 220 translating modes instead of 48,400, or in other words a savings of 99,45 % of the original costs.
